• Why do future Olympic athletes begin training at a young age?
• Why is it easier for children to learn a foreign language when they’re still young?
• Why do we encourage children to start reading early?
The answer is that children soak up information like sponges when they are very small. It follows that the younger children are in understanding the importance of good behaviour and social graces, the better their success is with people. A person’s success is influenced by how well those people skills are put to use. Fundamental traits such as courtesy, respect and sensitivity to others are inherent in these human skills.
A child’s mind is open and dynamic. Their mental and motor skills are developing and they take in everything from their environment.
There is one element we can’t ignore. Before we teach our children good manners, we must ensure that their home environment is happy. It is vital that children perceive their family and home environment to be happy, peaceful and stable. When these ingredients are missing, a child will express his unhappiness and dissatisfaction in many ways – sulking, defiance for authority and pure and simple disobedience.
The subject of manners and children has always inspired me. I know mothers and fathers put a premium on good behaviour and conduct. There’s nothing more emotionally satisfying than seeing a polite and well-mannered child.
I have taken that inspiration and turned it into a user-friendly how-to manual for parents who seek ways to teach their children good manners. Please use it whenever you can. Specific sections cover certain day-to-day situations. The goal was to make it a portable, easy to understand handbook: just your basic bible on manners, nothing top heavy.
